You are picked up with 10-12 other passengers in a Mercedes Sprinter Van owned by your tour company.
Pick-up times from hotels ranged from 6:30 to 7:30AM.For me, certainty around time/return was very important but YMMV. I paid $285 for the 4-day trip in advance. Yes, you can book upon arrival in San Pedro to save money. Stops could range from 10 to 20 minutes to over an hour. I would estimate that we made 5 to 10 stops per day and drove 4 to 6 hours per day. I would highly recommend this tour to younger people who have some level of tolerance for discomfort including early mornings, altitude sickness, plain but good food, and everything that comes along with sharing a Land Cruiser with 5 – 6 other people. Most tour companies are quite similar – staying in the same sorts of hostels/hotels, seeing the same sites, and driving similar quality vehicles. The tour is so much more than visiting the Salar De Uyuni as you continuously have the opportunity to view incredible landscapes. My tour company was Estrella del Sur / Tambo Loma. This can all be reversed if starting in Uyuni. The 3- and 4-Day tour is identical apart from the return trip to Atacama on Day 4. I completed the 4-day tour starting and ending in San Pedro de Atacama.
This was one of the most memorable trips of my life. I had read a bunch on Reddit prior to my trip but wanted to write a longer post that combined some of those details with my experience.
